Before I was a professional graphic designer I knew nothing about colour spaces and why they were important. It wasn't something that was widely talked about so probably not something I needed to know or care about right? Turns out I was very wrong.
My first experience with why it's important to understand them was when I was a teenager. I had designed stickers for my band at the time that had the lettering in a deep rich red on a black background. I delivered the file to the local business we had printing them for us. When we got them back, instead of the deep red I had chosen, they were HOT PINK!
At first, I thought the guy must have made a mistake. When I spoke to him he kindly informed me that the file I had provided him was in the wrong colour space. I had given him my design in RGB instead of CMYK. Time and money wasted.
The good news is, you don't need to go to design school or have someone else fix your files for you. I'm going to teach you the difference between colour spaces, and how to adjust your files to get accurate results.
